Responsibilities
 
The Young Professionals Programme examination in Photography covers topics in visual coverage of subjects relevant to the work of the United Nations.

Some of the key responsibilities of Photographer would be:

• To provide photographic coverage of the work of the United Nations both at the Headquarters and in the field, including travelling with the Secretary-General;

• To provide input and expertise in image selection for public dissemination;

• To act as the Photo Editor when required; conduct research and provide metadata for captioning and archiving purposes;

• To assist in overseeing photo lab operations and quality control of output

• To contribute to UN Photo's coverage planning;

• To conduct researches and make recommendations for coverage of UN activities in the field;

• To maintain close contact with media outlets to ensure speedy dissemination and widest possible usage of UN photos

• To act as Officer-in-Charge during the absence of the Chief of the Unit; and

• To undertake other assignments as required.
 
Competencies

- Experience in using both conventional and digital technologies as well as photo editing, portrait lighting and photo transmissions;
- Familiarity with the current state of industry technology as well as content and presentation formats;
- Fully proficient in computer skills and the use of Photoshop and other relevant image editing  and other applications;
- Sound political judgement in providing coverage, photo selection and the accompanying metadata;
- Ability to handle highly sensitive information;

Education
 
At least a first-level university degree in one of the following fields of study:

1. Field of study: Audio Visual Arts, Design, Fine Arts , Graphic & Audio Visual Art, Graphic Design, (These fields of study can be found under the main course of study “Art”.  Applicants who majored in Photography must select the field of study “Graphic & Audio Visual Art”. );

2. Field of study: Journalism, Multimedia (These fields of study can be found under the main course of study “Journalism & Information”.);

All applicants must have at least a minor in Photography.
 
Work Experience
 
No work experience is required.  Experience providing photo coverage in the field and at live events is highly desirable.  Advanced knowledge of digital image editing program (Photoshop) as well as other digital programs (Lightroom, Photo Mechanic, or similar meta data / captioning programs) highly desirable.  Experience in journalistic writing highly desirable.
 
Languages
 
Fluency in one of the working languages of the UN Secretariat, English or French, (both oral and written) is required; knowledge of the other is desirable. Knowledge of another UN official language is an advantage.
 
Assessment Method
 
Applications will be screened on the basis of the eligibility criteria.  Only up to the 40 most qualified applicants per job family and per nationality/member state will be convoked for the written examination.

The cost of traveling to the examination centre is to be covered by the examinee.

The written examination shall consist of:

(i) a general paper, which tests drafting and analytical skills; and

(ii) a specialized paper, which tests the substantive knowledge of the particular job family for which the examinee is being tested.

All examinees in all job families shall complete the same general paper.  The general paper and/or specialized paper shall be eliminatory. The paper that is going to be marked first shall be eliminatory, and only examinees successful in that paper of the examination shall have the other paper marked. Each part of the specialized paper may be eliminatory. The Specialised Boards of Examiners shall decide on the part(s) of the specialised paper that will be eliminatory.

Applicants convoked for the job family of Photography must bring to the written examination a portfolio of 12 images that represent their photography.  The images must be printed on photo paper not exceeding 8.5 inches x 11 inches (216 mm x 279 mm) and not smaller than 8 inches x 10 inches (203 mm × 254 mm). The portfolio shall be collected together with the answer booklets at the end of the written examination, and will be evaluated as part of the specialized paper.

Only examinees who are successful in the written examination will be invited to the oral examination. The oral examination will be conducted via online video conference.  The oral examination may also include a practical photographic assignment exercise.
 
United Nations Considerations
 
The United Nations shall place no restrictions on the eligibility of men and women to participate in any capacity and under conditions of equality in its principal and subsidiary organs. (Charter of the United Nations - Chapter 3, article 8). The United Nations Secretariat is a non-smoking environment.

Candidates will be required to meet the requirements of Article 101, paragraph 3, of the Charter as well as the requirements of the position. The United Nations is committed to the highest standards of efficiency, competence and integrity for all its human resources, including but not limited to respect for international human rights and humanitarian law. Candidates may be subject to screening against these standards, including but not limited to whether they have committed, or are alleged to have committed criminal offences and/or violations of international human rights law and international humanitarian law.
